A cable inside a cabinet has an easy life. A cable on a trailer, a container or a cargo deck does not. Field failures in this equipment tend to come from the same short list:
- Moisture at the connector. Water wicks along an unsealed conductor, corrodes the contacts, and a lighting or ABS circuit goes intermittent.
- Flex fatigue at the strain relief. Jumper cables and trailing leads flex at the same point thousands of times. Without proper strain relief, the conductor breaks inside an intact jacket.
- Abrasion and crush. Cables are dragged across decks, pinched in doors, and run over.
- Chemical attack. Diesel, hydraulic oil, de-icing fluid and cleaning agents soften the wrong jacket compound.
- Mismatched parts. A replacement plug or cable that almost matches the original works on the bench and fails in service.
